Origins
H Company was founded in May 2024 in Paris by five co-founders. Karl Tuyls, Laurent Sifre, Julien Perolat, and Daan Wierstra were all senior research scientists at Google DeepMind, with collective contributions to the AlphaGo, AlphaZero, and MuZero research lines. Charles Kantor, the inaugural CEO, was a former Stanford University computational mathematics student with a background in finance and strategy. The founding thesis was an explicit pursuit of "frontier action models," foundation models trained for autonomous task execution rather than conversation, with an additional framing that the company would build AI that is "Holistic and Humane" alongside frontier capability.
The May 2024 $220 million seed round, at the time the largest AI seed in European history, was led by US venture firm Accel with participation from Amazon, UiPath, FirstMark, Bpifrance, Innovation Endeavors, and additional individual investors. The round set an early benchmark for European agentic-AI fundraising and signalled appetite among US growth investors for European AI exposure outside the Mistral AI thesis.
The first year was disrupted by departures. In late 2024, three of the five co-founders (Tuyls, Wierstra, and Perolat) left the company over what H described as "operational differences." Their exits left Sifre and Kantor as the remaining founders, though Sifre transitioned into the CTO role and Kantor continued as CEO until June 2025. Karl Tuyls subsequently became director of Meta's Paris AI research lab.
H launched its first product, Runner H, in November 2024 as a closed beta for early users. The product was positioned as a "frontier action model" combining LLM reasoning with autonomous task execution across browsers, applications, and APIs.
In June 2025, the company released its second-generation product suite: Runner H public beta, Surfer H (a browser-based computer-use agent), Tester H (an automated software testing agent), and the open-weights Holo-1 visual-language model under Apache 2.0. The bundled release was positioned as a European alternative to the agentic offerings from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google DeepMind, with claimed 92.2 percent success rate on a public computer-use benchmark and a 5.5x cost reduction relative to peers.
Also in June 2025, Charles Kantor was replaced as CEO by Gautier Cloix, formerly the managing director of Palantir's French unit. The leadership change was framed by industry coverage as a transition from research-led founding to commercial-execution scaling. Kantor remained associated with the company as a co-founder. Two weeks after Cloix's appointment, COO Mike Benchimol announced his departure.
Mission and strategy
H's stated mission is to build agentic AI that delivers task execution beyond the capabilities of conversational chatbots, with the explicit framing of "Holistic and Humane" frontier AI. The strategic premise is that the next phase of AI commercial value will accrue to systems that can autonomously complete multi-step tasks across digital and operational environments, and that European-domiciled AI labs can compete in this category by offering enterprise customers an alternative to US-domiciled providers.
The strategy combines four threads. The first is the Runner H orchestration platform, positioned as the unified interface through which users dispatch complex objectives in natural language. The second is the Surfer H browser-based agent for web automation tasks. The third is the Tester H automated software testing agent for enterprise QA workflows. The fourth is the Holo-1 open-weights visual-language model, released under Apache 2.0 to seed developer adoption and to position H within the broader open-weights European AI ecosystem alongside Mistral AI and Aleph Alpha.
The competitive premise is that agentic AI is structurally distinct from conversational AI, and that purpose-built action-foundation models will outperform general-purpose LLMs on multi-step task execution. H's pricing positioning emphasizes cost-per-task efficiency relative to OpenAI's, Anthropic's, and Google DeepMind's agentic offerings, a positioning that is durable only if the underlying capability holds.
Models and products
- Runner H. Flagship orchestration agent that accepts natural-language objectives and dispatches them across tools and APIs. Public beta released June 2025; closed beta opened November 2024.
- Surfer H. Browser-based computer-use agent for automating web-application workflows. Released June 2025.
- Tester H. Automated software testing agent targeting enterprise QA customers. Released June 2025.
- Holo-1. Open-weights visual-language foundation model released under Apache 2.0 in June 2025. Available on Hugging Face.
Distribution channels include direct enterprise sales for the H product suite, open-source distribution via Hugging Face for Holo-1, and developer access to the Runner H public beta. The company has not announced a consumer chat product.
Benchmarks and standing
H has reported a 92.2 percent success rate on a public computer-use benchmark for its agentic suite, characterized in the June 2025 product launch as state-of-the-art for the category. Independent verification of the figure across third-party leaderboards has been mixed; the benchmark category is fragmented and direct comparisons depend on the specific evaluation harness.
Holo-1 has been adopted in the broader open-weights ecosystem since its June 2025 release, with download counts on Hugging Face indicating community uptake but not at the scale of Mistral or Llama-derived releases. The Apache 2.0 license positions Holo-1 favorably for enterprise integration.
The benchmark gap relative to OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google DeepMind on horizontal AI evaluations is substantial; H's positioning is on agentic-task evaluations specifically, where the comparison set is narrower and the methodologies are still maturing.
Leadership
As of May 2026, H's senior leadership includes:
- Gautier Cloix, Chief Executive Officer. Joined June 2025 from Palantir, where he was managing director for France. Tasked with scaling commercial operations.
- Laurent Sifre, co-founder and Chief Technology Officer. Former Senior Research Scientist at Google DeepMind, with co-author credits on the AlphaGo and AlphaZero papers. The senior research-and-engineering leader for the company.
- Charles Kantor, co-founder and former CEO. Replaced as CEO in June 2025; remains on the founding team.
Departures from the company through 2024 and 2025 include three of the five original co-founders. Karl Tuyls, Daan Wierstra, and Julien Perolat departed in late 2024 over reported "operational differences." Karl Tuyls subsequently took the director role at Meta AI's Paris research lab. Mike Benchimol, who joined as Chief Operating Officer following the founder departures, announced his own departure two weeks after Cloix's CEO appointment.
Funding and backers
H raised a $220 million seed round in May 2024 at a reported pre-money valuation just under $2 billion. The round was led by Accel with participation from Amazon, UiPath, FirstMark, Bpifrance (the French sovereign-fund-affiliated investor), Innovation Endeavors (Eric Schmidt's family office), and individual investors including Bernard Arnault.
Reporting in late 2024 indicated that the company was preparing additional fundraising, with continued involvement from Bernard Arnault and other European investors. As of May 2026, public details on subsequent funding rounds are limited; the company has not announced a Series A.
The strategic-investor base spans US growth funds (Accel, FirstMark), large-enterprise corporates (Amazon, UiPath), and European institutional backers (Bpifrance, Arnault). The configuration was distinctive at seed stage and reflected the deliberate framing of H as a transatlantic agentic-AI bet.
Industry position
H occupies a focused position as a Paris-based agentic AI company with European corporate and sovereign backing. The combination of the DeepMind-derived founding team, the Accel-and-Amazon-anchored seed round, and the agentic-only product positioning produced an unusual profile at launch.
The first-year founder departures and the June 2025 CEO transition reframed the company's narrative. Industry coverage has characterized the leadership churn as an execution challenge against a rich seed valuation, and the June 2025 product launch as a recovery moment in which the remaining team demonstrated technical delivery. Whether the recovery converts into commercial traction at the implied valuation is the principal open question.
H's positioning relative to the agentic offerings from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google DeepMind is structurally narrower. The European framing, the Holo-1 open-weights release, and the cost-efficiency positioning are the principal differentiators.
Competitive landscape
H competes with several frontier and agentic AI providers:
- OpenAI. Operator and the broader ChatGPT agent suite are the principal US competitors on consumer and enterprise agentic tasks.
- Anthropic. Claude's computer-use capability is the closest direct competitor on browser-and-application automation. Anthropic's enterprise sales motion overlaps with H's target customer base.
- Google DeepMind. Gemini's agent capabilities and the Project Astra research program target the same agentic AI category.
- Mistral AI. The principal European AI-foundation-model peer. Mistral's positioning is on language modeling and open-weights releases; the agentic overlap is partial.
- Sakana AI, Liquid AI, and other regional agentic startups. Smaller-scale agentic and frontier AI labs.
- Microsoft, Amazon AGI, Apple. Enterprise platform competition for the agentic AI category.
Outlook
Several open questions affect H's trajectory in 2026 and 2027:
- Series A or growth-round close, including whether the implied valuation holds against the leadership churn and product execution since seed.
- Realized commercial customer traction for Runner H, Surfer H, and Tester H, with named enterprise customers among the watchable signals.
- Holo-1 successor releases and the depth of the company's investment in the open-weights line.
- Continued senior leadership stability following the CEO transition and COO departure.
- The competitive dynamic with Mistral AI and other European AI peers, particularly as European AI sovereignty discussions accelerate.
- The agentic AI capability gap relative to OpenAI's, Anthropic's, and Google DeepMind's offerings.
