Origins
AI21 Labs was founded in 2017 by Yoav Shoham, Ori Goshen, and Amnon Shashua. The founder cohort was unusually distinguished: Shoham is a Stanford computer-science professor emeritus and a senior figure in academic AI research; Shashua is the founder of Mobileye (the autonomous-driving technology company acquired by Intel for $15.3 billion in 2017) and Hebrew University professor; Goshen is a serial Israeli technology entrepreneur. The founding thesis emphasized building enterprise AI capability with language understanding.
The 2018 to 2022 period saw AI21 develop the Jurassic foundation-model line, providing one of the early commercial alternatives to OpenAI's GPT-3. Wordtune, the consumer writing-assistant product, launched in 2020 with early adoption.
The November 2023 Series C of $208 million at $1.4 billion valuation positioned AI21 as a unicorn-tier enterprise AI company. The Jamba release in March 2024 introduced AI21's hybrid Mamba-Transformer architecture, with Jamba 1.5 (Mini and Large) released open-weights in August 2024.
The 2024 to 2026 period has seen AI21 emphasize enterprise AI orchestration through Maestro and other products, with enterprise customer focus.
Mission and strategy
