Origins

Physical Intelligence was founded in March 2024 by senior researchers from the principal global robotics-AI research organizations. Karol Hausman had been a senior research scientist at Google DeepMind robotics and a Stanford lecturer. Sergey Levine is a UC Berkeley professor and BAIR senior researcher in robotics-AI. Chelsea Finn is a Stanford CS professor with robotics-AI research output. Lachy Groom is a serial entrepreneur (Stripe and other technology companies). The founding cohort assembled what was widely characterized as the most senior robotics-AI research team to form an Insurgent in the contemporary period.

The π₀ (Pi-Zero) release in October 2024 was the principal first-year research output. π₀ is a general-purpose robot foundation model trained on robotic-manipulation data across multiple robot embodiments, with demonstrated capability across diverse manipulation tasks. The release was characterized in industry coverage as a advance in robotics-AI foundation-model research.

The November 2024 Series A of $400 million at $2.4 billion valuation, with Jeff Bezos, OpenAI Startup Fund, Thrive Capital, Lux Capital, Khosla Ventures, and other investor participation, supported continued research and infrastructure investment.

Mission and strategy

Physical Intelligence's stated mission is to build general-purpose AI capable of operating in the physical world, with explicit positioning as a foundation-model layer for robotics rather than as a robot-hardware company.

The strategy combines two threads. First, foundation-model research with the π series providing general-purpose robot capability across multiple hardware embodiments. Second, partnerships with robot-hardware organizations to deploy Pi's foundation models on diverse robot platforms.

Models and products

  • π₀ (Pi-Zero). General-purpose robot foundation model released October 2024.
  • π₀.₅ and successor models. Continued model-release cadence.

Leadership

  • Karol Hausman, Co-Founder and CEO. Former Google DeepMind senior researcher.
  • Sergey Levine, Co-Founder. UC Berkeley professor and BAIR senior researcher.
  • Chelsea Finn, Co-Founder. Stanford CS professor.
  • Lachy Groom, Co-Founder. Serial entrepreneur.

Funding and backers

  • Earlier rounds (2024): Seed and other rounds.
  • Series A (November 2024): $400 million at $2.4 billion valuation, with Jeff Bezos, OpenAI Startup Fund, Thrive Capital, Lux Capital, Khosla Ventures.

Industry position

Physical Intelligence occupies a structurally distinctive position as the principal robotics-AI foundation-model Insurgent globally, with the founder-team research credibility and the private-capital base.

Competitive landscape

  • Skild AI. Direct robotics-AI foundation-model competitor.
  • 1X, Figure AI. Humanoid-robotics hardware peers; Pi is the foundation-model layer.
  • Google DeepMind (RT-2, RoboCat). Frontier-lab robotics research.

Outlook

  • π1 and successor flagship release.
  • Robot-hardware partnership expansion.
  • Continued senior research-talent recruitment.
  • Potential additional fundraising at higher valuations.
