Canada Pan-Canadian AI (CIFAR)
The Pan-Canadian Artificial Intelligence Strategy is the Canadian government's AI research-funding initiative, coordinated by CIFAR (Canadian Institute for Advanced Research) with funding commitment across the principal Canadian AI research institutes including Mila (Quebec AI Institute, Montreal), Vector Institute (Toronto), and Amii (Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute) (Edmonton). The 2017 launch of the strategy with an initial CAD $125 million commitment, followed by renewal commitments including the 2021 CAD $443 million Pan-Canadian AI Strategy 2.0 commitment, has anchored Canadian academic AI research-coordination through 2017 to 2026. As of April 2026, the Pan-Canadian AI Strategy is one of the principal national-government AI research-funding initiatives globally.

Origins
The Pan-Canadian Artificial Intelligence Strategy was launched in March 2017 by the Government of Canada with the initial CAD $125 million commitment over five years (2017 to 2022). The precursor commitment had anchored earlier CIFAR AI research-funding through programs including Learning in Machines and Brains.
The 2021 Pan-Canadian AI Strategy 2.0 commitment of CAD $443 million (2021 to 2026) expanded the program across Canadian AI research-coordination including Mila (Montreal), Vector Institute (Toronto), and Amii (Edmonton). The 2024 to 2026 period has continued Canadian AI research-coordination.
Mission and strategy
The Pan-Canadian AI Strategy mission is to advance Canadian AI research through multi-institute research-funding coordination. The strategy combines multi-institute research-funding portfolio across Mila, Vector Institute, Amii, and other Canadian AI research partners.
Distribution channels are predominantly research-funding distributions to Canadian AI research institutes.
