Origins

Tenev was born February 13, 1987 in Varna, Bulgaria, during the final years of the communist regime. His parents emigrated to the United States ahead of him, and he joined them at approximately age five in the early 1990s. His father later worked at the World Bank in Washington, D.C. Tenev has cited the early-childhood economic instability and the immigrant experience as formative for his subsequent orientation toward consumer access to financial markets.

He completed his secondary education in the United States and entered Stanford University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in mathematics. He met Baiju Bhatt, his eventual Robinhood co-founder, during a summer physics program at Stanford. Tenev continued at the University of California, Los Angeles for graduate study in mathematics, completing the Master of Science in 2008. He had initially intended to pursue a PhD in mathematics and an academic career, but left the doctoral program to work with Bhatt on financial-technology ventures.

Career

Tenev's professional career organizes around two principal companies, with smaller pre-Robinhood financial-technology ventures preceding the consumer-trading platform that defined his public profile.

He and Baiju Bhatt founded two earlier financial-technology companies in New York: Celeris in 2011 (a high-frequency trading firm building software for hedge-fund clients) and Chronos Research in 2012 (a low-latency trading-software firm). The pair then pivoted toward a consumer-facing model, with the founding thesis that mobile-first commission-free equity trading could expand market access well beyond the traditional discount-broker base.

Robinhood was founded in April 2013 in Menlo Park, California. The platform launched commission-free stock trading and grew rapidly through the 2020 retail-trading surge, going public on Nasdaq in July 2021 at an approximately $32 billion initial valuation. Tenev had been co-Chief Executive Officer with Bhatt before becoming sole CEO in November 2020. He has remained continuously in the role through to May 2026, including through the January 2021 GameStop trading episode that drew Congressional testimony, and the subsequent platform expansion into options, cryptocurrency, retirement accounts, and brokerage products.

Tenev co-founded Harmonic in 2023 in Palo Alto with Tudor Achim, a Stanford computer-science PhD candidate and prior co-founder and chief technology officer of autonomous-driving company Helm.ai. Achim took the day-to-day operating Chief Executive Officer role at Harmonic; Tenev serves as Co-Founder and Executive Chairman, providing strategic and fundraising leadership while continuing to run Robinhood. Harmonic's research thesis is that AI capable of producing formally verified mathematical proofs is the path to high-assurance reasoning in technical domains. The flagship Aristotle model produced formally verified solutions to five of six problems on the 2025 International Mathematical Olympiad, framed by the company and reported in industry coverage as a first for any AI system. Harmonic closed a $120 million Series C in November 2025 at a $1.45 billion post-money valuation, led by Ribbit Capital with Sequoia Capital, Index Ventures, Kleiner Perkins, and Emerson Collective.

Affiliations

  • Celeris: Co-founder, 2011.
  • Chronos Research: Co-founder, 2012.
  • Robinhood Markets: Co-founder, 2013 to present. Co-Chief Executive Officer 2013 to 2020; sole Chief Executive Officer November 2020 to present.

Notable contributions

Tenev's published record runs through two operating companies in distinct domains, with Robinhood the principal commercial output and Harmonic the AI research-and-product venture.

  • Robinhood Markets (April 2013). Co-founded the consumer commission-free trading platform; Nasdaq listing July 2021 at approximately $32 billion initial valuation. Continuous chief-executive role since 2013.
  • Harmonic (2023). Co-founded the mathematical-superintelligence AI startup; $1.45 billion post-money valuation following the November 2025 Series C; the Aristotle reasoning model produced formally verified solutions to five of six 2025 IMO problems.
  • Public testimony. Tenev testified before the US House Financial Services Committee in February 2021 on the GameStop trading episode and Robinhood's response, drawing sustained mainstream coverage of the commission-free retail-trading model.

Investments and boards

  • Robinhood Markets (consumer fintech): Co-founder and Chief Executive Officer, 2013 to present. Publicly traded on Nasdaq since July 2021.
  • Harmonic (AI): Co-founder and Executive Chairman, 2023 to present. Privately held at $1.45 billion post-money valuation following the November 2025 Series C.

The dual operating-and-board structure between Robinhood and Harmonic is unusual: Tenev runs Robinhood operationally while taking the strategic-and-fundraising role at Harmonic, with Achim handling Harmonic's day-to-day operations. The structural separation has been characterized in industry coverage as a way to preserve Robinhood-CEO bandwidth while leveraging Tenev's investor-network access for Harmonic capital formation.

Network

Tenev's longest-running professional relationship is with Baiju Bhatt, his Stanford-program-and-Robinhood co-founder. The Harmonic co-founder relationship with Tudor Achim, a Stanford computer-science PhD candidate with prior autonomous-driving startup experience at Helm.ai, anchors the AI venture. Harmonic's investor cohort, including Ribbit Capital, Sequoia Capital, Index Ventures, Kleiner Perkins, and Emerson Collective, overlaps significantly with the consumer-fintech investor base that has tracked Tenev since the Robinhood years. Industry coverage of Harmonic's capital formation has consistently cited the Tenev-investor relationships as a structural advantage in the company's fundraising trajectory.

Position in the field

As of May 2026, Tenev occupies an unusual position among AI-startup co-founders. He is the only sitting public-company chief executive of a major consumer-fintech business who simultaneously co-founded and chairs a frontier-tier AI research startup. The closest peer comparison in the broader founder-operator cohort is Elon Musk, who runs multiple operating companies in parallel; Tenev differs in that the Harmonic role is structured as Executive Chairman rather than Chief Executive Officer, with Achim handling operating leadership.

Harmonic's mathematical-superintelligence positioning places the company alongside Axiom Math in the formal-mathematics-AI insurgent cohort. Tenev's public profile has remained dominated by his Robinhood role, with Harmonic appearances on the Sequoia Training Data podcast and other industry-investor venues serving as the principal Harmonic-specific public surface.

Outlook

Open questions over the next 6 to 18 months:

  • Aristotle capability disclosures. Whether Harmonic publishes additional benchmark results or formally verified-solution capability evidence beyond the 2025 IMO result.
  • Harmonic applied deployment. Pace of conversion from research demonstrations to commercial verification deployments in software, hardware, and adjacent high-assurance technical applications.
  • Harmonic Series D. Whether the next round closes at unicorn-plus pricing and on what timeline relative to the November 2025 Series C.
  • Robinhood expansion. Continued product expansion across crypto, retirement, and adjacent consumer-fintech surfaces.
  • Bandwidth allocation. Whether the dual Robinhood-and-Harmonic operating-and-board structure remains stable as Harmonic scales toward applied-deployment milestones.
