Origins

Kantor's academic record spans pure mathematics, engineering, and applied artificial intelligence across institutions in France and the United States. He completed a Bachelor of Arts in pure mathematics at PSL Research University in Paris, a Master of Science and Executive Engineering at CentraleSupélec (the French engineering school formed from the 2015 merger of Centrale Paris and Supélec), and a Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence at Stanford. He held a Research Fellowship at Harvard University from 2020 to 2021 and served as a Teaching Assistant and Venture Resident at Stanford from 2022 to 2023.

The Stanford and Harvard tenures placed Kantor inside the United States academic-AI network during the GPT-3 to GPT-4 transition, with research and teaching activity in computational mathematics and applied AI. The cross-Atlantic academic background later anchored H's positioning as a European AI lab with United States investor and ecosystem connectivity.

Career

Kantor co-founded H in 2023 in Paris with Laurent Sifre (then a senior research scientist at Google DeepMind and a co-author of the AlphaGo papers), Karl Tuyls (then Research Director at Google DeepMind leading the Game Theory and Multi-Agent team), Daan Wierstra (the first research scientist at DeepMind from 2011), and Julien Perolat (a senior research scientist at DeepMind). The five-co-founder configuration combined Kantor's academic-and-finance research-and-strategy background with four senior DeepMind veterans, an unusual founding team for a European AI insurgent of the period.

The May 2024 $220 million seed round, at the time the largest AI seed in European history, was led by United States venture firm Accel with participation from Amazon, UiPath, FirstMark, Bpifrance, Innovation Endeavors (the Eric Schmidt family office), and individual investors including Bernard Arnault. The round set an early benchmark for European agentic-AI fundraising. As chief executive at the seed announcement, Kantor served as the principal external voice for the company.

The first year was disrupted by departures. In late 2024, three of the five co-founders (Tuyls, Wierstra, and Perolat) left H over what the company described as "operational differences." Their exits left Sifre and Kantor as the remaining co-founders. Sifre transitioned into the Chief Technology Officer role; Kantor continued as chief executive through the November 2024 Runner H closed beta and the June 2025 product-suite launch. He has been described in French press as "the French Sam Altman" and was profiled by Le Point and praised by President Emmanuel Macron in policy discussions during the period.

In June 2025, the company announced the transition of the chief-executive role to Gautier Cloix, formerly the managing director of Palantir Technologies' France unit for ten years. Per the company's governance announcement and reporting in Sifted and Bloomberg Law, the change was framed as a transition from research-led founding to commercial-execution scaling. Kantor remained associated with the company as a co-founder and shareholder, with the company's announcement stating that he "will remain an important shareholder and will continue to be involved in H's journey." Two weeks after Cloix's appointment, Chief Operating Officer Mike Benchimol announced his own departure.

Affiliations

  • Stanford University: Teaching Assistant and Venture Resident, January 2022 to 2023.
  • Harvard University: Research Fellow, 2020 to 2021.

Notable contributions

  • H founding (2023). Co-founded the Paris-headquartered agentic-AI company with Laurent Sifre, Karl Tuyls, Daan Wierstra, and Julien Perolat, with a stated thesis on building "frontier action models" rather than conversational chatbots.
  • May 2024 seed round. Led the chief-executive role through the closing of the $220 million seed round at a reported valuation just under $2 billion, the largest AI seed in European history at the time.
  • Public framing of European agentic AI. Public commentary positioning H as a European-domiciled alternative to United States frontier labs in the agentic-AI category, alongside Mistral AI on the broader European-AI-sovereignty thesis.
  • November 2024 Runner H closed beta launch. Led the company through the initial product launch in closed beta.
  • June 2025 product-suite expansion. Led the company through the public-beta release of Runner H, the launch of Surfer H and Tester H, and the open-weights Holo-1 release under Apache 2.0, immediately preceding the chief-executive transition.

Position in the field

As of May 2026, Kantor occupies a distinctive position as a former chief executive of one of the most-watched European agentic-AI insurgents. The combination of an academic-and-research background spanning PSL, CentraleSupélec, Stanford, and Harvard with the operating role at H through the seed round and product launches sits between the typical research-scientist-founder profile of the DeepMind-derived peer set and the operator-investor profile of United States frontier-lab leaders.

Industry coverage has characterized the June 2025 chief-executive transition as a structurally significant moment for the European agentic-AI category. The Cloix appointment imported Palantir's enterprise-deployment playbook into a French-domiciled AI insurgent at a stage when most European AI peers had not yet built equivalent commercial-execution capability. Kantor's continuing co-founder role positions him at the strategic-and-shareholder layer of the company rather than in day-to-day operating leadership.

Outlook

Open questions over the next 6 to 18 months:

  • Future operating role. Whether Kantor takes a future operating role at H or pursues an independent operating venture.
  • Investor and policy network. Continued French-government and European-investor engagement, given the relationships formed during the chief-executive period.
  • H trajectory. Continued involvement in H's strategic direction as the company scales commercial operations under Cloix.
  • Public commentary. Public framing of European agentic AI relative to United States peers as the agentic AI segment matures.
